Duchess: Carian Slicer
1. Summary
Duchess casts Carian Slicer (a magic sword swing from a staff) over and over. It costs 4 FP, comes out fast, and Restage replays half of it. Magic Attack Power Up and Improved Carian Sword Sorcery are separate lines that multiply, so they stack on every relic. Players call it her best and most consistent build (Youwy) and “maybe the best build in the game” (Jager).
No relics: 282 DPS. With the core lines: 354 DPS (+25.4%). Standing with players: 2 (1 = the current meta). Model: rank pack 10350000-429b9ee52d80.
For: solo and trio. Needs: the Carian Glintstone Staff, the only staff that carries Carian Slicer (decoded: no relic grants it). It is about 0.2% of a broad Uncommon weapon drop, but 12.5% of the Uncommon staff table. That is why Dormant Power Helps Discover Staves is core: it makes the game drop staves.
2. How it plays
- Pick up staves until you have the Carian Glintstone Staff (the Dormant Power line helps).
- Cast Carian Slicer at close range. It uses her dodge-attack animation; in Nightreign’s animation data one cast can follow another every 0.61 s.
- Restage after a burst: 50% of the last 3 s replayed, 12 s cooldown.
- FP is not a problem: 4 FP a cast, 180 FP at level 15 plus two Starlight Shards, spent over the build’s own kill time.
Decoded rotation Magic stack / Carian Slicer sorcery, no relics: 282 DPS on the 8 Nightlords’ mean (level 15, weapon tier 3, 70% of the fight attacking).
| Use | Uses / min | Share of DPS | Where the numbers come from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sorcery: Carian Slicer | 68.7 | 89% | decoded AtkParam rows 44400×1 (one cast: the decoded bullets on one target); catalyst scaling INT 100 × graph (estimate) × catalyst tier 1.52 (decoded); rate: Nightreign TAE: a480 sustained 0.611s per cast; × share 1 × uptime 0.7 |
| Character skill: Restage (replay) | 5.0 | 11% | replays knob restageReplay 0.5 × damage of the last knob restageWindowSeconds 3s (estimate; Restage has no AtkParam of its own); rate: decoded HeroParam cooldown 12s × 1 use(s) |
3. Core relics
| Line | Players | Model value | Decoded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magic Attack Power Up +4 | 3 agree | +12.0% | SpEffect 7001504: magic ×1.12 |
| Improved Carian Sword Sorcery | 2 agree | +12.0% | SpEffect 7043300: attack ×1.12, only attack sub-categories 2 |
| Dormant Power Helps Discover Staves | 2 agree | +0.0% | SpEffect 7633000 (engine-coded: no number in the params) |
- Magic Attack Power Up +4. Decoded SpEffect 7001504: magic ×1.12. Carian Slicer is all magic, so it is +12% on the whole build, on every relic that has it.
- Improved Carian Sword Sorcery. Decoded: ×1.12, only for spells of sub-category 2 (the Carian sword sorceries). A separate line from Magic Attack Up, so both multiply.
- Dormant Power Helps Discover Staves. No damage. Its SpEffect (7633000) sets state 2122, and the undecoded tail of the row names weapon type 57, staves (my reading: the drop logic is engine-coded). Players say it removes the staff RNG; the decoded Uncommon staff table gives the Carian Glintstone Staff 12.5% of the time. Without the staff there is no build.
4. Strong and flex lines
| Line | Players | Model value | Decoded |
|---|---|---|---|
| [Duchess] Use Character Skill for Brief Invulnerability | 1 agree | +9.1% | SpEffect 7500301: 0.4 s |
| [Duchess] Improved Character Skill Attack Power | 1 agree | +2.2% | SpEffect 7290000 (engine-coded: no number in the params) |
| [Duchess] Defeating enemies while Art is active ups attack power | 2 agree | +1.2% | SpEffect 7032701: every 1 s, while state 2204; 7032705: 0.1 s; 7032706: attack ×1.05, 30 s; 7032702: 12.5 s; 7032703: 0.1 s; 7032704: attack ×1.15, 30 s |
| Changes compatible armament’s skill to Hoarfrost Stomp at start of expedition | 2 agree | +0.0% | SpEffect 7124000 (engine-coded: no number in the params) |
The model’s own strongest lines that players don’t list for this style:
| Line | Players | Model value | Decoded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack power up after defeating a Night Invader | – | +14.0% | SpEffect 7060201 (engine-coded: no number in the params) |
| Magic Attack Power Up +3 | – | +10.5% | SpEffect 7001503: magic ×1.105 |
| Improved Affinity Attack Power +2 | – | +10.0% | SpEffect 7610802: attack ×1.1 |
| Improved Sorceries +2 | – | +10.0% | SpEffect 7611202: attack ×1.1 |
| Improved Sorceries +1 | – | +8.5% | SpEffect 7611201: attack ×1.085 |
| Improved Affinity Attack Power +1 | – | +8.0% | SpEffect 7610801: attack ×1.08 |
| Magic Attack Power Up +2 | – | +6.5% | SpEffect 7001502: magic ×1.065 |
| Magic Attack Power Up +1 | – | +5.5% | SpEffect 7001501: magic ×1.055 |
| Improved Affinity Attack Power | – | +5.0% | SpEffect 7610800: attack ×1.05 |
| Improved Sorceries | – | +5.0% | SpEffect 7611200: attack ×1.05 |
- [Duchess] Defeating enemies while Art is active turns Finale into a kill-stack nuke on trash and field bosses (+15% per kill for 30 s, decoded SpEffect 7032704). It doesn’t help in a one-boss Nightlord fight, which is what the model ranks.
- Hoarfrost Stomp (skill swap on the starting dagger) is magic damage, so Magic Attack Up buffs it: a day-one AoE before you find the staff.
5. Curses
Cost = what the model measures on this rotation (damage, stats, attack time) plus any hand penalty for what it can’t measure (stuns, death risk). Lower is cheaper.
| Curse | Cost (≈ % damage) | Model | Hand penalty | Players |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reduced Dexterity and Faith | 0.0 | +0.0% | – | |
| Reduced Faith and Strength | 0.0 | +0.0% | – | |
| Ultimate Art Charging Impaired | 0.0 | +0.0% | – | |
| Reduced Damage Negation for Flask Usages | 0.3 | -0.3% | – | cheap |
| Reduced Rune Acquisition | 1.0 | +0.0% | 1 | avoid |
| Reduced Vigor and Arcane | 1.0 | -1.0% | – | |
| Continuous HP Loss | 1.1 | -1.1% | – | avoid |
| Repeated Evasions Lower Damage Negation | 1.4 | -1.4% | – | |
| Taking Damage Causes Frost Buildup | 1.5 | +0.0% | 1.5 | |
| Near Death Reduces Max HP | 1.5 | +0.0% | 1.5 | |
| Reduced Flask HP Restoration | 1.6 | -1.6% | – | |
| Reduced Damage Negation After Evading | 1.8 | -1.8% | – | |
| All Resistances Down | 2.0 | +0.0% | 2 | |
| Poison Buildup When Below Max HP | 2.5 | +0.0% | 2.5 | |
| Reduced Strength and Intelligence | 2.8 | -2.8% | – | |
| Reduced Intelligence and Dexterity | 2.8 | -2.8% | – | |
| Taking Damage Causes Poison Buildup | 3.0 | +0.0% | 3 | |
| Rot Buildup When Below Max HP | 3.0 | +0.0% | 3 | |
| Taking Damage Causes Blood Loss Buildup | 3.5 | +0.0% | 3.5 | |
| Taking Damage Causes Rot Buildup | 4.0 | +0.0% | 4 | |
| Taking Damage Causes Madness Buildup | 4.0 | +0.0% | 4 | |
| Taking Damage Causes Sleep Buildup | 4.0 | +0.0% | 4 | |
| Lower Attack When Below Max HP | 4.3 | -4.3% | – | |
| Taking Damage Causes Death Buildup | 8.0 | +0.0% | 8 |
Slicer scales with Intelligence through the staff. Strength, Dexterity and Arcane curses cost almost nothing (the dagger matters only before the staff). Players’ cheap pick is Reduced Damage Negation for Flask Usages. Avoid Continuous HP Loss (forbidden).
6. Avoid
None listed.
- Boosts Attack Power of Added Affinity Attacks does nothing for spells (sparring: no change on Carian Slicer).
- Weapon-skill lines (Improved Skill Attack Power) don’t reach sorceries.
7. Vessels

Magic Attack Up and Carian lines come on relics of any color, so the best vessel is the one with the most slots in the colors your best Carian and Magic relics have. The ranking tries every vessel you own.
8. Synergies
- Magic Attack Up × Improved Carian Sword Sorcery: two SpEffects, two attack rates, multiplied.
- Restage replays the buffed Slicer hits, so every buff above is inside the replay too.
The model finds no payoff ↔ enabler pair on this rotation that adds more together than apart.
9. The data
The biggest use, Sorcery: Carian Slicer (1 hit a use), each hit on a Nightlord with the core lines worn:
Basis: decoded AtkParam rows 44400×1 (one cast: the decoded bullets on one target); catalyst scaling INT 100 × graph (estimate) × catalyst tier 1.52 (decoded).
| Hit | Element | Attack | Relics (core set) | Defense 100 | Nightlord absorption (mean of 8) | Damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sorcery: Carian Slicer | Magic | 423 | ×1.254 | ×0.6 | ×0.86 | 274 |
Relic multiplier: the core lines’ attack rates multiply (different SpEffects), each limited to the attack sub-categories it names. Defense: Nightlords have defense 100 on every type, which keeps 0.6 of attack in the sparring tests (dps_model DEF100_FACTOR). Absorption: the decoded *DamageCutRate per element.
Decoded rows used: Magic 4440 (Carian Slicer, 4 FP), its AtkParam row (flat magic, scaled by the staff’s sorcery scaling); recast 0.61 s (Nightreign animation a480). Spell damage = flat × staff scaling × staff tier (ReinforceParamWeapon correctSpellScalingRate).
10. Evidence
Sources players’ tiers for this style rest on (docs/research/relic-priority/Duchess.json, researched 2026-11-01):

Measurements: Carian Slicer 162 a swing on the dummy (Recluse level 15, no relics, before 1.03.2); 203 unbuffed → 647 with a Scholar’s buffs; two Slicer taps kill a red Miranda flower with 26 Finale stacks (Reddit).
11. Gaps and confidence
The model agrees with players’ tier order on 73% of 11 line pairs.
Where it disagrees:
- core “Dormant Power Helps Discover Staves” +0.0% below strong “[Duchess] Use Character Skill for Brief Invulnerability” +9.1%
- core “Dormant Power Helps Discover Staves” +0.0% below strong “[Duchess] Improved Character Skill Attack Power” +2.2%
- core “Dormant Power Helps Discover Staves” +0.0% below strong “[Duchess] Defeating enemies while Art is active ups attack power” +1.2%
- Sorcery scaling. The decode gives Recluse 177 sorcery scaling at level 15; a 2025 tester’s screen showed 159. If the screen was right (or the game changed since), every spell here reads about 11% high. It is one number for all sorceries, so the ranking between sorcery builds doesn’t change.
- Estimates: 70% of the fight casting; survival as attack time.
- To measure in the Sparring Grounds: Duchess at level 15 with a +0 Carian Glintstone Staff: the sorcery scaling the menu shows, and one Carian Slicer hit on the dummy.
